Upton, Wyoming’s Red Onion Museum, named for an early-day tavern in the community, is located just west of the present town of Upton. Located within the community’s “Old Town,” the historic collection stands where the community of Iron Town took roots in the 1800s. Beyond the museum building, you’ll find a windmill, sod houses, historic cabins and relics of a bygone era. Children love the opportunity to peek inside the cabins and learn about history by exploring the historic little community. Trek inside the museum itself to hear the tales of pioneers who fought to make a living in the area, World War II heroes, and a colorful community. You’ll find stories of cowboys, ranchers, miners, railroaders, and more!
Early life in northeast Wyoming was hard, resulting in innovative and thrifty residents. Beauty was found in the fine work on a hand-sewn dress or a baptism gown made to perfection. The Red Onion Museum's exhibits share the story of life in Wyoming for pioneer women and the great lengths they went to in order to care for their families.
Upton resident Arline Jenkins operated this switchboard when telephones were introduced to the Upton community. Green insulators, like those shown in this photograph, were used to string the wire in a manner that allowed for message transmission.
